At Sunovis Ranch, we’ve always believed that what we’re building here goes beyond sheep and solar grazing. It’s about stewardship—of the land, of our animals, and of the people who will carry this work forward.
One of the partnerships we’re most proud of reflects that belief in a very real way: our ongoing collaboration with the Franklin College Biology Department and its pre-veterinary program.
Since 2020, we’ve had the privilege of working alongside Dr. Ben O’Neal and his students, welcoming them to the Ranch on a regular basis throughout the academic year. Most Fridays, you’ll find a group of Franklin students out in the pasture—boots on the ground, sleeves rolled up—learning not just about animal care, but actively doing it.
Learning by Doing
Over the years, these students have become an integral part of life at Sunovis Ranch. They’ve gained hands-on experience in:
- FAMACHA training and parasite management
- Immunizations and general herd health practices
- Fecal egg counts and data tracking
- Monitoring weights and hoof health
- Soil health observation and pasture management
And in some of the most memorable moments, they’ve been right there with us for live lamb births—a powerful, hands-on experience that brings everything full circle. It’s one thing to study animal science in a classroom. It’s another to witness new life entering the world and understand the care, attention, and responsibility that come with it.
A Track Record We’re Proud Of
We’re especially proud to share that every Franklin College student who has participated with us and gone on to apply to veterinary school has been accepted.
Now, we certainly can’t take all the credit for that—these are bright, driven students guided by an excellent academic program. But we do know this: we consistently hear from them that their hands-on experiences at Sunovis Ranch play a meaningful role in their interviews.
They’re able to speak confidently about real-world situations—about handling animals, making health assessments, and understanding the connection between land, livestock, and long-term sustainability. That kind of experience sticks with people.
A True Partnership
This relationship has been a win-win from the start.
For students, it’s an opportunity to build confidence, gain practical skills, and connect classroom learning to real-world application.
For us, it’s a chance to invest in the next generation, benefit from an extra set of capable hands, and engage with curious, thoughtful young people who bring great energy to the Ranch.
And at the center of it all is Dr. Ben O’Neal, whose leadership, enthusiasm, and commitment to his students make this partnership possible. We’re incredibly grateful for his collaboration and for the trust he places in us to be part of his students’ educational journey.
Looking Ahead
As we continue to grow Sunovis Ranch, partnerships like this one remain at the heart of what we do. Solar grazing is about innovation—but it’s also about people. It’s about creating opportunities, sharing knowledge, and building something that lasts.
We’re proud to play even a small role in preparing future veterinarians for what lies ahead—and we can’t wait to see where they go next.
