It’s also stewardship, education, family legacy, and a vision for what’s possible when agriculture and renewable energy come together with care.
Founded in February 2020 by Paul and Dana Cummings, Sunovis Ranch is a solar grazing company dedicated to integrating livestock management with sustainable land use and clean energy production. Located on a scenic 20-acre property, the ranch is home to a
flock of approximately 25 breeding ewes, their lambs, and a charismatic ram named
Captain Redbeard.
But Sunovis is more than a farm — it’s a working model of regenerative agriculture in action, built by a couple who bring together decades of hands-on experience in farming, education, energy, and consulting.
Dana is a seasoned strategic consultant with a background in nonprofit leadership, education, and environmental stewardship. As co-owner of Sunovis Ranch, she leads the ranch’s business development, planning, and client engagement efforts. Dana is especially passionate about bridging sustainable land use with community-focused practices, and she brings a strong sense of vision and structure to every partnership.
With over 20 years in renewable energy and a lifetime of agricultural experience, Paul brings a rare dual expertise to Sunovis Ranch. He manages flock logistics, grazing execution, and land assessments, drawing on his deep understanding of pasture health, animal behavior, and regenerative grazing techniques. Paul’s approach to grazing is both science-driven and grounded in lived experience.
Together, Paul and Dana bring complementary strengths and a shared commitment to land, animals, and people.
Their work has made Sunovis Ranch a trusted partner for solar developers, graziers, and landowners alike.
At Sunovis Ranch, rotational grazing is at the heart of the operation. Their 27 permanent paddocks allow them to optimize forage, support soil health, and increase biodiversity — all while ensuring animal well-being. This thoughtful land management makes solar grazing not only possible but productive.
Sunovis’s innovative approach offers a smarter alternative to traditional mowing, helping solar developers reduce costs and environmental impact while opening doors for farmers and graziers to expand operations sustainably.
Sunovis Ranch also serves as a living classroom. Since 2020, Paul and Dana have partnered with Franklin College’s pre-veterinary program, giving students hands-on experience in sheep handling, health assessments, and basic medical care. Program alumni have gone on to vet schools at Purdue, Michigan State, the University of Illinois, and the University of Tennessee — a testament to the quality of mentorship provided on the ranch.
Paul and Dana are joined on the ranch by their three teenage children — Susan, PJ, and Owen — who contribute to the daily rhythm of farm life. Their family-run operation is a model for others in the solar grazing industry: creating additional revenue streams, supporting rural resilience, and building multigenerational legacies rooted in land and livestock.
Sunovis Ranch stands at the intersection of agriculture, clean energy, and education. With every project, Paul and Dana are helping shape a future where farming is sustainable, communities are empowered, and land is managed with intention.
If you’re a solar developer, grazier, landowner, or educator interested in the promise of solar grazing, you’ll find in Sunovis Ranch a knowledgeable partner — and a place where good ideas take root.
